GPU Passthrough - AMD Radeon WX4100 Pro

Hi All,

I'm stumped by a recent issue trying to passthrough a GPU to a Windows 10 VM on ESXi6.7.

I have passed through the GPU, so all vt-d requirements have been met, but i'm unable to power on.

The vmkernel.log shows the following, which a quick google search yields zero results:

WARNING: PCIPassthru: 5292: Couldn't setup PCI passthru IOMMU domain because the IOMMU can't reach the entire VM's memory range

PCIPassthru: 2828: Failed to create per device iommu domain for 0000:01:00.0

I have tried the usual pci.Hole settings in the vmx, but nothing i do makes any difference.

GPU: AMD Radeon WX4100 Pro

Motherboard: Gigabyte Z370M-D3H

CPU: Core i7 8700

32GB RAM

Thanks

vsphere upgrade 5.5U3B to 6.5 U1g- Approach for updating vmware tools and hardware

Hi there,

We preparing for upgrade from vSphere 5.5 U3b to 6.0. Following is our vSphere set-up;

* ESXi host hardware is HP DL380 Gen 8

* 1 DRS cluster with 7 ESXi hosts,

* Apprx 400 VMs

* Cluster resources configured sustain for 1 host failure

Our plan is to upgrade to vSphere 6.5 U1g with as minimum downtime as possible during upgrade.

Questions:

1. Though I have tested vCenter 6.5 U1g in test environement and found working fine, are there any issues with vCenter or PSOD complatints with ESXi with this update? is it stable?

2. We are plannig to upgrade 6 ESXi hosts during 1 weekend by vMotioning the VMs another and perform upgrade one host by another. What the best pratice to upgrade vmware tools and virtual hardware? is it ok update tools and virtual hardware 1 week later? so that If any issues observed I somthing to lay by by running VMs on 1 esxi host still runing on 5.5 U3b? will it cause any performace issues running vms with outdated tools on esxi 6.5 hosts? What would be the best way to handle this?

Re: Importing VM with custom vnet from Fusion in Workstation

wila, I realised a couple of things:

1. Workstation 12 doesn't prompt to check if a VM was copied or moved.

2. The attached ethernet interface was eth1, so I had to rename /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 in CentOS 6.

3. The MAC address on ifcfg-eth1 and vmx file need to be corrected with the VM's ethernet hardware.

All this should have been automatically checked and adjusted (interactively if necessary) by Workstation.

Hi,

You didn't mention if you uninstall Parallels tools.

In addition to that question, did you install VMware Tools?

Most likely both are answered by yes, but it is hard to troubleshoot anything if you have to make assumptions.

There's still not much info that has been shared for being able to deduce why you are seeing this.

What kind of apple hardware are you using?

What guest OS are you running (I understand it is windows, but which one?)

Can you attach a vmware.log file? The vmware.log file can be found within the virtual machine bundle. (Please do not copy&paste log contents into a post here as it makes the thread very difficult to navigate and read. You can find an attach link at the bottom right area when posting a reply. Note that this is only available in the discussion thread, not in the inbox)

Are you running an antivirus product? If so which one?

Finally, no it isn't normal for a VM to use 42% CPU when idle.

Hi,

re. Suprised that Workstation doesn't prompt, it should.

Difficult for VMware to change this as it is different in almost every Linux distribution, even among distribution versions.

This is why I asked which version of centOS you ran as it is different in centOS 7.

It's up to Linux to handle this with grace and that's just not always the case.

But do I understand from your reply that you got it to work now?

Hi Lalegre,

Another question:

Is there a way to see if a VM is currently been deduplicated? I mean to see the information of deduplication and compression individually.

No, you are not able to see this on VM level. Deduplication and compression is a cluster wide setting.

However, you can see a used capacity breakdown for certain objects. See figure below.

^ Well, I don't know why CentOS 6 has eth0 on Fusion 7 and eth1 on Workstation 12. It doesn't seem to be distro dependent.

And I didn't modify all the ethernet0.* keys I had in the original vmx file from Fusion 7, but only the MAC address.

If you open a VM from a different hypervisor in Workstation 12, does it ask you if it's been copied or moved?

And, yes, it works now.

I still have a problem with the custom vnet being proxied for http (GPO) and I cannot modify the PAC file. I still have to check --proxy-bypass-list on Chromium. But I don't know if such a problem could be posted here.

Take a look to  Dell PowerEdge RAID Controller (PERC) | Dell  and you'll find that a H200 is a supportet RAID Controller for R210. Taking a closer look to PERC - Dell™ PERC H200 and 6Gbps SAS HBA Features | Dell US there no Cache at all and a single spindle doesnt deliver the IOPS for 4 VMs.  A 2TB SAS sounds more like a NLSAS drive.

Its on the HCL for 6.0. Most likely it will runs under 6.5 because its based on a LSI chip.

Btw.  "S"130 mean "Software" which is a chipset/fake raid controller and needs special driver and support from the OS.

Joerg

eth1 appeared as the only ethernet interface running ifconfig -abefore I changed the MAC address.

When I get a chance, I'll try to open the vmx file without a key for hardware address.

If you open a VM from a different hypervisor in Workstation, does it ask you if it's been copied or moved?

I'm currently doing similar upgrades to v6.5 U1g (vCSA as well as ESXi) for my customers too, and didn't experience any issues with that version.

With DL380p Gen8 hosts, remember that you'll have to user HPE's Pre-Gen9 custom ESXi image.

To save time during the upgrade, I created a customized ESXi bundle (HPE Pre-Gen9 v6.5U1 image + ESXi patches for Build 7967591). The main reason why I still stick with U1 is the missing compatibility for the backup.

In addition to the ESXi update, consider to upgrade the hosts' firmware. HPE offers a Gen8.1 SPP ISO image, which however doesn't yet contain the latest BIOS, and iLO firmware.

Yes the same situation. Nothing is listed in the CSV except virtual machine header

Share VM across two Macs

I’m currently using Fusion on my iMac in the studio on my home network. I’d like to be able to access the VMs I have set up on there on my MacBook as well. At the moment I’m just copying the VMs between the two machines (pain).

What’s the best way to do this? I’ve considered saving the VMs on a NAS and access them via Fusion on each Mac, but not sure if that would work?

What are your setups, in this respect?

Hi Andre

Thanks for your respons. Yes I have used HPE customized ISO. we are using windows based vcenter with external database, we shall upgrade to VCSA during our next upgrade cycle.

could you please also advise on my second question as well? upgrdaing esxi hosts in DRS cluster without downtime for VMs,and upgrading VMware tools and virtual hardware later stage in more controlled way taking down time from application owners or possibly schedule during next month patch cycle etc? do you think it’s a good idea? Will it negatively impact on the performance during that time ? What is best practice?

Hi,

If you open a VM from a different hypervisor in Workstation, does it ask you if it's been copied or moved?

Yes it does. That is the standard behavior (and I just verified that with Workstation 14.1.2 once more for your request and it has always been like that)

In theory I can only come up with one scenario where it does not ask.

If your VM comes from another hypervisor and you already have an older copy of that VM which sits in location "A".

Then you update that copy into the same location. In that scenario it already had a VM registered at that location so it might not ask.

When I just tested that theory it did not hold though and it still asked "did you copy or move" on first boot of the VM.

Sorry, I completely forgot to answer this.

VMware Tools and Virtual Hardware versions (unless you are using a really old version) are backward compatible, so there's no urgent need for an upgrade.

Since it is required to power-cycle (power off - power on) all VMs to make them aware of new CPU features (Meltdown/Spectre), you may schedule the upgrades at a later time.

For details about the "Hypervisor-Assisted Guest Mitigation" see https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/52085. Please note that this KB article is about the January Microcode patches, but it describes the steps, and requirements.
